We have been very fortunate over the last few years to develop a large gallery of images relating to the officers and men of the Hertfordshire Regiment during the Great War. You can see here a selection of the photographs of the 'Herts Guards', both at home and at war.
Regimental Headquarters
The Hertfordshire Regiment headquarters was originally based in Hertford and maintained staff there throughout the Great War.
No 1 Company (A & H Companies)
A & H Companies combined in January 1915 to form No 1 Company. Men in these units were typically drawn from the towns of Hertford, Hatfield, Waltham Cross, Cheshunt, Wormley and Hoddesdon.
No 2 Company (B & F Companies)
B & F Companies combined in January 1915 to form No 2 Company. Men in these units were typically drawn from the towns of St Albans, Berkhamsted, Tring and Ashridge.
No 3 Company (C & D Companies)
C & D Companies combined in January 1915 to form No 3 Company. Men in these units were typically drawn from the towns of Bishop’s Stortford, Ware, Widford, the Hadhams, Braughing & Watford.
No 4 Company (E & G Companies)
E & G Companies combined in January 1915 to form No 4 Company. Men in these units were typically drawn from Royston, Hitchin, Letchworth, Baldock, Stevenage & Whitwell.
Machine Gun Section
The Machine Gun Section of the Hertfordshire Regiment was from 1908-1914 raised and headquartered in Stevenage. Most men within the section were from that town.
Corps of Drums
The Hertfordshire Regiment Corps of Drums was from 1908-1914 based in the town of Ware. Most of the personnel in the section were from that town up to 1914.
