Born 1898 in Meophan, Kent. Son of George Everitt and Alice Maud Everitt. In 1901 they were living at Luddesdown, in Kent, his father was a gamekeeper.
In 1911 they were living at Keepers Lodge, Poles Lane, Thundridge, his father still a gamekeeper, presumably at Poles. Percy was 13 and at school. When he enlisted Hertford, he was recorded as living in Ware.
Wartime Service
Enlisted in Hertford, into the 1st/1st Battalion, Hertfordshire Regiment.
His Medal card shows he entered the Theatre of War – France on the 10th July 1915. He would have been 15, nearly 16 at the outbreak of War, and enlisted at Hertford, perhaps falsifying his age. He should not have been overseas as that was not supposed be allowed until aged 19.
An extract from the Battalion War Diary for 3rd October “Private 29996 Percy Everitt killed in action”. This may have been as 1st Herts were being relieved by the 2nd Grenadier Guards but two machine guns were attached to KRRC, and maybe he was with one of them. At the time of his death he was probably only just 17.
