Pre War

Herbert Charles Fuller was born in Flamstead End, Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, on 17th November 1898, son of Albert Fuller a, Gardener and Emma Elizabeth Fuller (nee Walduck). One of ten children although one died in infancy.


His parents were married in Cheshunt, Herts, on 21st February 1882.


1901 Census records Herbert aged 2, living with his parents, five brothers and 2 sisters at, 5 Stockwell Lane, Cheshunt, Herts.


1911 Census records Herbert aged 12, at school, living with his parents, four brothers and sister Mary (10) at, 1 Eveline Cottages, Flamstead End, Cheshunt, Herts.

Wartime Service

Herbert enlisted at Bedford, joining the 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, with the service number 41513. On completion of his training, he saw service on the Western Front. He was Killed in Action on 8th April 1918. The Battalion was in the Front-line trenches in the area of Gommecourt, Somme.


Battalion War Diary for 8th April 1918: Frontline, 2. Officers and 7 O.R. Killed – 1 O.R. died of wounds. 1 Officer & 9 O.R. wounded.

Additional Information

His effects of £7-9s-00d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £4, went to his mother Elizabeth Fuller.


His Headstone inscription “LOVED AND REMEMBERED BY ALL” was requested by his sister Mary Fuller.


His brother Private 16712 Walter Robert Fuller, of the 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, died on 12th November 1918, of illness.
