Ambrose James Gilbert was born in East Barnet, Hertfordshire, on 1st March 1891, son of Stephen James Gilbert a, Gardener and Sophia Gilbert (nee Clarke). One of three children, Sedonia (B 1890), Ambrose (B 1891) and Leslie (B 1894).
His parents married at St Martins Church, Kentish Town, London, on the 12th February 1888.
1891 Census records Ambrose aged 3 months, living with his parents, at The Gardeners Cottage, Southgate Road, East Barnet, Herts. His sister Sedonia (1) was staying with her Grandparents John & Sophia Dann in Huntingdon.
1901 Census records Ambrose aged 10, living with his parents, sister Sedonia (11) and brother Leslie (7) at, Bromfield House, (The Gardeners Cottage), Southgate, Middx.
In November 1907 Ambrose enlisted as James Gilbert in the Kings own (Royal Lancashire Regiment) with the service number 9429.
Wartime Service
At the outbreak of war James (Ambrose) was serving with the 2nd Battalion, stationed at Lebong, India.
The 2nd Battalion left India for England in November 1914, aboard the SS “Kenilworth Castle” arriving home on the 22nd December 1914, moving to Hursley Park Camp, Hampshire, for war training. Mobilized for war as part of the 83rd Brigade of the 28th Division, landing at Le Havre, France on the 16th January 1915.
James (Ambrose) was later promoted to Lance Corporal. In May 1915, he was wounded and admitted to No 3. Casualty Clearing Station on his recovery he returned to the front line. He was later transferred to the 1st Battalion. James (Ambrose) died on the 4th July 1916 of wounds received in action at the Battle of Albert (1st-13th July 1916) part of the Battle of the Somme (1st July 1916 to 18th November 1916) aged 26.
Additional Information
His effects of £17-4s-00d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity went to his father Stephen Gilbert.
His Headstone inscription “NOT FORGOTEN” was requested by his father Stephen Gilbert, of The Gardeners Cottage, Collage Road, Cheshunt, Herts.
