Pre War

Born in Bushey, Herts (registered in the Watford district) in the third quarter of 1893, Ernest Daniels was the son of Mary Daniels. Mary subsequently married (registered in the Watford district) Henry Lewis Rodney in the third quarter of 1896.  Mary died in 1906 (registered in the Watford district) aged 37 and Henry re-married in 1910 (registered in the Watford district) to Mary Curd.


Ernest attended the Red Lion Yard Infants’ School in Watford and then Beechen Grove Board School in Watford.  On the 1901 Census he was aged 7 and was living in Watford with his mother, step-father and three siblings. On the 1911 Census, he was aged 17 and employed as a greensman on a golf links. He was still living in Watford, but with his aunt and guardian Charlotte Emma Thornton.

Wartime Service

Ernest enlisted for General Service in Harrow, Middlesex in August 1914 and served with the 12th Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment. He was deemed permanently unfit (i.e. not fit for light duties at home) and recommended for discharge on 20 April 1915. He died at home and is buried in the Watford (Vicarage Road) Cemetery; Plot K, Row 7, Grave 400.
