Pre War

Herbert Henry Hill was born in Kingston on Thames, Surrey, in 1894, the son of Henry and Annie Hill and one of six children, although one died in infancy.

On the 1891 Census the family were living at Kingston on Thames,  where his father was working as a Journeyman Painter. They remained in Kingston on Thames in 1911 and were living at 27 Shortlands Road, where his father was working as a house painter and Herbert was a Grocer's Assistant.

His parents were living at Bourne End Lane, Boxmoor, Herts on pension records.

Wartime Service

Herbert enlisted in Watford and joined the 7th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. He was killed in action on 20 November 1917 during the Battle of Cambrai.

He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louveral, France.

Additional Information

His parents received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £4 6s 10d which was divided equally between them. His mother initially received a pension of 4 shillings a week, which was later increased to 5 shillings a week. (N.B. SDIGW states that Herbert was born in Boxmoor, but this seems to be incorrect. He enlisted in nearby Watford and his parents were living in Boxmoor on pension records following his death)
