William was born in Heath and Reach, Beds on 18 May 1893 to Daniel Horn, Farm labourer, and Mary Anne (nee Brandom).The Family were living in Northchurch in 1911 at Hill Farm cottages, Northchurch.
William married Emily Scott and they had a daughter Ruby Gwendoline born in 1912.
Officially recorded as born in St Albans and enlisting there.
Wartime Service
William enlisted in Royal Horse Artillery as a Gunner 68745 (Artillery equivalent of Private). He probably served in Dardanelles and Egypt.
He died of wounds in France on 1 or 2 Feb 1918, while serving with ‘Z’ Battery RHA and is buried in Etretat Churchyard Extension Cemetery, north of Le Havre, France. Etretat extension was used for burials from No 1 General Hospital. The inscription reads:
ALSO WILLIAM HORN SON DIED OF WOUNDS IN FRANCE JAN 1917

War Gratuity of £13 10s and arrears of £14 14s 5d paid to his widow Emily.
William is also commemorated on the family grave in St Mary's Church cemetery extension, however the date recorded in January 1917, which does not match official records.
