Pre War
Walter Hubert Howard was born on 26 May 1897, the youngest son of Henry and Roseanna Howard.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at The Terrace, Theobald Street, Radlett, Herts, where his father was a Blacksmith. By 1911 they had moved to Lily Cottage, Watford Road, Radlett. He lived at Crosspath, Radlett on enlistment.
Wartime Service
Walter enlisted in Hertford and served with the Hertfordshire Yeomanry, Household Cavalry and Cavalry of the Line from 16 November 1915. He served in the Balkans and died from drowning in Mesopotamia.
His name is commemorated on a screen wall in the cemetery as all of the headstones were removed in 1933 owing to deterioration because of salts in the soil. The individual burial places are not known.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £5 10s and pay owing of £4 0s 5d.
