Pre War

Daniel William Juett was born on 11 June 1895, in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, son of Daniel Juett a Farmer and Mary Ann Juett (nee Dickens), the eldest of five children.


1901 Census records Daniel aged 5, living with his mother, sister Isabel (2) and his Grandfather Thomas Dickens a Retired Farmer at, Ford Field Road, Millbrook, Bedfordshire. His father was working away from home on the night of the Census.


1911 Census records Daniel aged 15, living with his mother and father a Dairy Farmer, and four sisters at, Hermitage Farm, Flitton, Beds.


He attended The County Agricultural Collage at Ridgemont, Beds, from 1911.


Daniel emigrated to Canada between April and May 1914.

Wartime Service

Danial enlisted at Calgary, Alberta, Canada on 29 April 1915. He was recorded as 5' 9" tall, with blue eyes, brown hair, aged 19, his occupation is given as a Farmer. He was  issued the service number 446342, and posted to the 56th Overseas Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. He sailed with them for England, from Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 23 March 1916, aboard the S.S. Baltic, arriving in early April 1916. He arrived in France with the 7th Battalion in May 1916. 


Receiving a shrapnel wound to his back on 13 June 1916 at Ypres, Belgium, he was admitted to No 13. General Hospital, Boulogne, France, on 14th June, transferred to No. 2. Western General Hospital in Manchester arriving there on 16 June. He was transferred to Bushey Park Convalescent Hospital on 22 July, he then went on to Epson for Physio Therapy treatment and then to Heaton Mersey Red Cross Hospital, Lancashire, before being discharged and returned to active service. Posted to the 14th Battalion on 21 September 1916, and appointed Lance Corporal on12 March 1917, the following month Danial was killed in action on 9 April 1917, at the Battle of Vimy Ridge. (The Battle of Vimy Ridge 9 to 12 April 1917, was part of the Battle of Arras).

Additional Information

His father, Mr. D. Juett, "Fordfield" Ampthill, Beds., ordered his headstone inscription: "HE IS NOT HERE HE IS RISEN". The Borehamwood Memorials have him as W D Juett, all other records have him as D W Juett. His service record is available at the Canadian National Archives.
