Bertie Osborne was born in Farnham, Essex in 1892 to William and Jane Osborne.
On the 1901 and 1911 Censuses he was living with his family at Walnut Tree Houses Cottages, Farnham, Essex. He was working as a farm labourer in 1911. On 23 December 1913 he married Florence Mary Jones at the Parish Church, Hockerill Herts and they lived at 3 Crown Terrace, Hockerill, Herts. They had a child William John Osborne born on 24 February 1914. He was living at Out Northgate, Bury St Edmunds, on enlistment.
He was recorded as born Farnham, Essex and living in Hockerill, when he enlisted in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk
Wartime Service
He enlisted on 22 March 1915 and initially served with the Norfolk Regiment under service no. 20523 from 3 December 1916 in France.
He suffered from dermatitis of the legs on two occasions and received a gunshot wound to the head on 2 October 1917 but recovered and was discharged from hospital back to duty. He was appointed unpaid Lance Corporal on 1 April 1917.
Some records suggest he was taken prisoner and was a returned POW when he died of pneumonia at the 42nd Stationary hospital in Courban.
Additional Information
His widow Florence received a war gratuity of £14 and pay owing of £24 6s 6d. She was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week for herself and her son with effect from 2 June 1919.
