Harold Ronald Pegrum was born on 19th June 1899 in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, son of Henry James Pegrum a, Chargeman at the Royal Gunpowder Factory at Waltham Abbey, and Louisa Pegrum (nee Michell). One of eleven children although one died in infancy.
1901 Census records Harold aged 1, living with his parents, and six siblings at, 21 Queens Road, Waltham Cross, Herts. His uncle Albert Pegrum was living with the family.
1911 Census, Harold aged 11, is at school, living with his parents and eight siblings at, 67 Eleanor Cross Road, Waltham Cross, Herts.
Wartime Service
Harold enlisted at Bedford, posted to “The Queens” (Royal West Kent Regiment) with the service number G/29647. On completion of his training, he saw action on the Western Front.
He was Killed in Action on 29th September 1918, aged 19. He is buried in the Zantvoorde British Cemetery in Belgium.
Additional Information
His mother Louisa received a Dependents Pension of 10/6 a week from 3rd June 1919.
His effects of £8-01-10, pay owing and his war gratuity went to his father Henry Pegrum.
His Headstone inscription “UNTIL THE DAY BREAKS“ was requested by Mrs. L. Pegrum, of 67 Eleanor Cross Road, Waltham Cross, Herts, his mother.
