Henry Charles Aylett was born in Romford, Essex, on 5 November 1899, son of Charles Aylett, a serving soldier and Sarah Matilda Aylett (nee Monk). The eldest of six children, three brothers and two sisters. Henry was baptised at St Andrews Church, Romford, Essex, on 22 April 1900. His parents were married in the same church on 20 February 1898.
1901 Census records Henry aged 2, living with his parents at, 38, Gildersome Street, Woolwich, London. His father’s occupation is recorded as a serving soldier.
His father served in Ireland with his Regiment, his brothers Bertie, William and sister Eileen, were all born in Ireland.
By the 1911 Census his father had retired from the army. Henry is recorded as aged 12, at school, living with his parents, and five siblings in, The Row, Henham, Essex. The Census also records his father as an Army Pensioner and a Nursery Labourer.
The family moved to Cheshunt, Herts, after the 1911 Census.
Wartime Service
Henry enlisted at Edmonton, Essex, as Charles Aylett, posted to the Duke of Cambridges Own (Middlesex Regiment) with the service number L/15853. Seeing service on the Western Front.
Henry was killed in action on 19 April 1916, he is buried in the CWGC Dartmoor Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt, France.
Additional Information
His effects of £4-2s-1d, Pay Owing and a War Gratuity of £5, went to his father Charles Aylett.
