John Charles Bacon was born in in St Albans in 1883, the son of Robert and Emma Maria Bacon, and baptised at the age of 4 on 21 September 1887 in St Albans Abbey, Herts.


On the 1891 Census the family were living at Watsons Row, St Albans where his father was working as a general labourer and his mother as a straw hat maker. They had moved to 47 Adelaide Street, St Albans by 1901and remained there in 1911 when John was working as a Postman. 


He married Louisa Dean in St Albans on 7 July 1915 and they had two children, Amy and John. 


He gave his address as 47 Adelaide Street on enlistment in November 1915 but his widow later lived at 29 Alexandra Road, St Albans. She married Joseph Rance in 1922 in Hemel Hempstead. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in St Albans on 25 November 1915, was mobilized on 3 June 1916 and posted as a Gunner to the Royal Garrison Artillery at No. 1 Depot.


He went to France on 24 June 1917 and served as a Gunner with the 289th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery in the field from 30 June 1917. He was killed in action on 29 September 1917 and is buried at Klein-Vierstraat British Cemetery in Belgium.

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £5 7s 7d. She also received a pension of 18s 9d a week for herself and one child from 22.4.18.
