Pre War
Charles Rickett was born in 1899 in Buck’s Hill, Sarratt, Hertfordshire, son of Arthur Rickett and Ellen Jane (nee Epathite) Rickett.
He was Christened on 21 August 1900 in Chipperfield, Herts, with his brother Alfred (5), and sister Alice (3), their father Arthur was recorded as Deceased.
His mother Ellen remarried on 30 June 1900, to Thomas Pritchard, in Watford, Herts.
1901 Census records Charles aged 2, living with his mother, stepfather Thomas Pritchard, sisters Rose 9, Alice 3, and brother Thomas 7, in, Dawes Lane, Sarratt, Herts. Their mother Ellen died in 1906, aged 38.
1911 Census records Charles aged 12, at school, living with his aunt Lily Burgin at, Bucks Hill, Sarratt, Herts, his brother Thomas 17, and sister Alice 13, were also living with their aunt.
Wartime Service
Charles enlisted at Bedford, Beds, (SDITGW record he enlisted at Redford, Beds), posted to the 31st Training Reserve Battalion with the service number TR/10/26077. Later transferred to the, Queens Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) with the service number G/28407.
He was killed in action on 22 March 1918, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial to the fallen.
Additional Information
His effects were split between his two brothers and sister, his Pay owing 15/4, to Alfred, 15/4, to Thomas and 15/4 to Rose. His War Gratuity £1-3s-4d, to Thomas, £1-3s-4d, to Alfred and £1-3s-4d, to Rose.
He is listed as Ricketts on the CWGC and SDITGW records, military records have him as Rickitt.
