Frederick Charles Pomfrett/Pomfret was born in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, in 1892, son of Francis James Pomfrett/Pomfret a, Cattle Drover and Mary Pomfrett/Pomfret (nee Cakebread). The sixth of seven children.
He was Baptised on 6th January 1892, in Waltham Cross, Herts. His address is given as Hospital Cottages, Waltham Cross, Herts.
His farther Francis died in 1894, his death was registered in Edmonton, Middx, he was 36 years of age.
1901 Census records Frederick aged 9, at school, living with his widowed mother Mary, three brothers, Francis (19), William (15), Alfred (11), two sisters Alice (17) and Elizabeth (13) at, 61 Crescent Road, Cheshunt, Herts.
1911 Census, Frederick is living with his married sister Alice, her husband Frederick Hook and their three children at, 45 Eleanor Road, Waltham Cross, Herts. His occupation is given as a Nursery Labourer.
Wartime Service
Frederick enlisted at Cheshunt, Herts, posted to the Suffolk Regiment with the service number 5067, 5187 & later 201998. On completion of his training, he saw action on the Western Front. He was Killed in Action on 22nd April 1917, possible during the Arras Offensive (9th April – 16th May 1917), aged 25. He is buried in the Cojeul British Cemetery, St. Martin-Sure-Cojeul, France.
Additional Information
His effects of £5-19-03, pay owing and his war gratuity of £4-10-00, went to his eldest sister Mrs. Alice M. Hook.
His Grandfather James Cakebread (1838-1901) was a regular soldier, served as Trooper 1154, in the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queens Bays) for 21 years. Serving in India for 10 years. Fredericks mother Mary was born in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, in 1862.
