Philip George Stokes-Rees was born in Dorking, Surrey on 5 September 1898, the son of William and Florence Stoke-Rees, and baptised on 4 October 1898 at Westcott, Surrey. His father was then a Captain in the Royal Navy, [later Admiral].


On the 1911 Census he was a boarder at Haileybury College, Great Amwell, Hertford. 


His home address on officer service records was given initially as 14 Sydney Street, Chelsea, SW3 followed by 15 Kings Avenue, Ealing, London W5 and at the time of his death was given as Park View, Berkhamsted, Herts. 

Wartime Service

He joined the air service on 12 November 1916, having previously been a Private in the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps.  He was appointed temporary Flight Officer at Crystal Palace, then sent to Vendome. He received his Royal Aero Club Aviators' Certificate on 26 February 1917 at Royal Naval Air Station, Vendome, France.


He served as a Lieutenant with the 205th Training Depot Station, Royal Air Force and was said to be "a very keen and capable pilot instructor".


He died on 18 June 1918 as the result of a flying accident and is buried in Vendome Town Cemetery, Loire-et-Cher, France.
