Bishop's Stortford Town Memorial

Charles Henry Alexander Tharby was born in Bishop's Stortford on 7 November 1897 to Charles and Fanny Tharby and baptised at St Mary the Virgin, Farnham, Essex on 23 January 1898.  On the 1911 Census he was living with his parents at 147 Rye Street, Bishop's Stortford, when he was a 13 year old schoolboy and his father was a domestic valet. On demobilisation his home address was given as The Grange, Bishop's Stortford.

Wartime Service



He attested on 10 December 1915, was placed on army reserve until 10 May 1916 and then posted initially with the Middlesex Regiment and appointed unpaid Lance Corporal on 28 July 1916. He transferred to the Royal West Kent Regiment under Reg. No. G/23593 on 1 September 1916 and went to France on 19 November 1916.  He reverted to Private at his own request on 10 January 1917. He suffered a scald on his right foot and was invalided back home on 23 February 1917 until his recovery, when he embarked with the BEF  on 1 August 1917 and was initially posted to the 8th Btn Royal West Kent Regiment but reposted to the 10th Btn on 16 August 1917 and proceeded to the front the following day. He was wounded on 8 May 1918 when he suffered a gunshot wound to his head and arm/shoulder on 11/13 May 1918. He was transferred to the UK and remained there until demobilisation. He died in Bishop's Stortford in 1919.
