Wednesday 21st February 2018 - Dr John Greenacre - Shot at Dawn

Dr John Greenacre is now a military historian, following a 24-year career in the Army. As a helicopter pilot, he deployed on operations during the Gulf War, to the Balkans and Northern Ireland. He has also worked in Germany, Canada, the Falkland Islands and Kenya in areas from procurement to arms control. John achieved an MA in Military Studies from Cranfield (the Royal Military College of Science) and was awarded his PhD in History from the University of Leeds.
John is a part-time lecturer at Suffolk University and was appointed the Suffolk Centenary Coordinator in 2013, responsible for coordinating outreach activity centred on the centenary of the First World War. This includes academic, community and educational outreach activity across Suffolk with particular emphasis on working with schools throughout the county. He also works as a Battlefield Guide throughout Europe and has authored several books on military history.

A rising star in military history, Stuart is currently senior lecturer of war studies at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and the University of Wolverhampton. He has established a reputation as one of the country’s top historians, particularly in the subject of the Great War. A life-long Aston Villa fan, military history enthusiast and highly regarded speaker, Stuart will be joining to discuss the little known campaign in German East Africa, fought in polar-opposite conditions to the Western Front, a campaign that is little known today.

Stuart is a professional military historian and author specialising in the Egypt and Palestine Campaigns of the Great War. Stuart has authored a number of important works on the subject. A regular speaker in military history circles and an authority on two of the Great War’s lesser-known campaigns, this talk will lift the lid on the personal of experiences of the many servicemen who saw action in those theatres, which remain relatively unknown compared to those on the Western Front.

Wednesday 13th June - Professor Sir Hew Strachan - The US in The Great War
A household name in military history, Sir Hew has been at the pinnacle of the subject for many years and is a recognised global authority on The Great War. Originally educated at Cambridge University, he has since held postings at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Oxford and Cambridge Universities, University of Glasgow and until 2015 was Chichele Professor of History at Oxford University. Sir Hew has authored many important works on the history of the Great War and was knighted in 2013 for services to the Ministry of Defence. Highly regarded in history circles, Dr Meyer is a Professor of history at the University of Leeds, where she originally earned both her degree and MPhil, later going on to complete a PhD in modern history at Cambridge University. Jessica’s key areas of research have been into gender and the medical history of the First World war. Jessica will be joining us to tell the fascinating to story of the Royal Army Medical Corps and its incredible evolution during the conflict.

Indy Neidell – Indiana ‘Indy’ Neidell is an American historian and globally recognised Youtube personality, leading the incredibly successful ‘The Great War’ YouTube series which documents the First World War in real-time, combining archival footage and modern research. Originally from Houston, Texas, Indy studied history at Weslyan University and now resides in Stockholm, Sweden. Indy’s ‘The Great War’ channel has over 800,000 subscribers and reaches millions of viewers around the world each month. Indy will e talking to us about the Brusilov offensive, the single most costly battle of the Great War, a battle which is little known, even to Great War experts.

Wednesday 15th August 2018 - Colonel Jack Sheldon - The Defeat of the German Army in the West

Considered a leading historian of the German Army in the Great War, Jack was himself a career soldier. Educated at Inverness Royal Academy, Sandhurst Military Academy and Universities of Lancaster and Westminster, Jack spent 35 years as a member of the Queens Lancashire Regiment as well as a number of general staff appointments, his last post being British Army Military Attache in Berlin. Jack retired from the Army in 2003 with the rank of Colonel. Now residing in France, Jack has written a number of book son the German Army in the Great War and is widely considered to be the foremost expert on the subject.
