St Julian - 31/7/1917

This is the story of the Hertfordshires Darkest Day 31/7/1917. On that day 20 Officers and around 600 men launched an attack on the strongly defended German 'Langemarck Line'. The devastation that followed this attack was on par with the very worst losses for other regiments that had been incurred the previous summer in the infamous Somme attack of 1st July 1916.

459 men were killed, missing or wounded. This was 100% of its Officers and about 75% of its Other Ranks.
