Percy Samuel Dyde was born on 1 July1883 in Bushey, Herts, the son of William and Elizabeth  Dyde (nee Atherton), and was baptised on 30 September 1883 at Oxhey, Herts. He was one of four children.


The family were living at 2 Fortune Cottages, Rickmansworth, Herts in 1891 where his father was working as the driver of a stationery engine. The remained there in 1901 at which time 17 year old Percy was working as a groom (domestic).


He married Alice Beven in 1905 in Kent and, although his parents remained in Rickmansworth, on the 1911 Census Percy and Alice were living at 22 Burnham Road, Dartford, Kent and he was working as a reelerman in a paper making factory. They later lived at 20 Hawley Road, Wilmington, Dartford, Kent.  They do not appear to have had any children. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Dartford, Kent, and joined the Rifle Brigade, serving with the 1st Battalion and was promoted to Corporal. Although the circumstances are not known he was awarded the Military Medal for courage and gallantry under fire.


Percy was killed in action on 31 August 1918, aged 35. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £10 10s and pay owing of £10 11s 6d. She also received a pension of 16s 3d a week.
