Pre War

Alfred Ernest was born in Harpenden on 19 Jan 1896 to William James Dyer, A baker, and Mary Anne (nee Brazier).


By the 1901 Census the family were living on the High Street, Leagrave, Luton. On the 1911 census Alfred, aged 15, was working as an Iron Founder.

Wartime Service

Alfred enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment at Luton as Private 10729 in the 6th Battalion. He went to France with his Battalion on 30 Jul 1915.


The Battalion were active on the Somme at Bazentin, Pozieres, and the Ancre. Alfred was killed in action on or between 25 -26 Feb 1917 near Lens at Los-en-Gohelle but no details are forthcoming.

Additional Information

His father, Mr J. W.(Sic) Dyer, Marsh Rd., Leagrave, Beds. ordered his headstone inscription: "HE RESTS IN PEACE". War Gratuity of £11 10s and arrears of £4 8s 1d paid to mother.
