Pre War

Frederick George Thurley was born in 1894 in Bishop's Stortford to George and Charlotte Thurley and baptised at Holy Trinity, Bishop's Stortford on 25 February 1894. On the 1911 Census he was living with his grandmother at 58 Castle Street, Bishop's Stortford and working as a labourer. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted at Bishop's Stortford and served with the 7th Bn, Bedfordshire Regiment. He was killed during one of the Battles of the Somme, the Battle of Albert. On the night of 30 June/1 July the 7th Bn were in Carnoy Trenches ready for an early morning assault. An artillery bombardment had been carried out all night and increased in intensity up until 7.30 am (Zero Hour) which is when the assault began on the German first line trenches.

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £8 and pay owing of £4 10s 2d.
