Pre War

Son of Eliza/Elizabeth Ellen EADE. William was born 1877 in South Norwood, Surrey, and resided in Watford.

His mother possibly died 1924 in the Watford district aged 79.

On the 1881 census, aged 4 he lived in St George Hanover Square, London, with his mother and no siblings.  On the 1891 and 1901 Census, he is proving elusive – with the Army somewhere?  On the 1911 Census, a grocer’s assistant aged 33, he still lived in St George Hanover Square, with his mother and no siblings.

Recorded as born in Watford and was living there when he enlisted in London.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in London; appears to have no medals, and died at sea when the S.S. Fabala was torpedoed.  He had previously served in the second Anglo-Boer War as Sergeant 2942 Royal Hampshire Regiment; mention in despatches 10 September 1901.

Additional Information

There are articles about William in the Watford Illustrated dated 1 April 1915, and in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 3 April 1915. Unfortunately, William’s W.W.1 Service Record appears to have been one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
