Pre War
*1 These memorials commemorate a 'C A Stambridge', who the Diocese suggests has a connection to Hertford and that he was an Acting Bombardier in the Royal Regiment of Artillery (Royal Field Artillery). So, despite the fact that this man is named Charles Frederick Stambridge, and therfore they may still be some doubt, we recognise that Charles Frederick has an association with Hertford and was an Acting Bombardier in the Royal Garrison Artillery and therefore, because of the similarities it does seem likely that the name is intended to commemorate Charles Frederick Stambridge.
Born in Hertford in 1891 and christened on 19 Nov 1890 in Hertford son of George and Martha Stambridge, living in 8 City Street, Hertford in 1891 and in 1911 as gravel pit labourer.
Wartime Service
Enlisted at London on 12 Jan 1912 in the Territorial Force. He was serving in India from 2 Feb 1913 to 11 Dec 1916 and arrived in Basra on 12 Dec 1916 joining his battery in the field. He died in Mesopotamia of heat exhaustion.
