Wartime Service

Struck by a shell slinter whilst manning his gun and originally buried at Graincourt. His grave was lost and his name is recorded on the Cambrai Memorial to the missing.

Additional Information

James is also commemorated on the family headstone in Rickmansworth (Chorley Road) Cemetery. His part of the inscription reads:

ALSO OF GUNNER JAMES BURRELL STAMFORD RFA
SON OF THE ABOVE [James & Hannah Stamford]
WHO FELL IN THE BATTLE OF CAMBRAI NOVEMBER 30TH 1917 AGED 25 YEARS
