George William Tilbury was born in Gustard Wood, Hertfordshire, on 14 March 1875, son of George Tilbury, a Domestic Gardener and Mary Tilbury (nee Moulden). William was one of eight children, three died in infancy. He was baptised on 30 May 1875, in the Parish Church, Frogmore, Herts.


The 1881 Census records George aged 6, at school, living with his parents, older brother Henry (born 1870 and older sister Ellen (born 1872) in Gustard Wood, Herts. In the 1891 Census. George now 16, is working as a Domestic Gardener, living with his parents, sisters Ellen, & Rose (born 1883), brother Claude in Gustard Wood, Herts. In the 1901 Census records George aged 27, single, living alone, in Garden Road, Bromley, Kent, and he is employed as a Gardener at Sundridge Park Gardens, in Bromley. His father was living in Gustard Wood with daughter Ellen and son Claude, his mother having died in 1900.


George married Mary Woolhead of Wing, Buckinghamshire, the daughter of John and Hannah Woolhead, on 4 March 1903, in Wing, Bucks. They went on to have four children, twins -  Olive Ruth & Eileen Mary (born 1904), Gordon St George (born 1912) and Mary R (born 1915).


1911 Census records George married to Mary, they have twin daughters Eileen and Olive, and he is employed as a Domestic Gardener, they were living at Delaport Cottage, Wheathampstead, Herts.


His wife Mary died in 1916, aged 38, her death was registered in Hatfield, Herts.

Wartime Service

George was enlisted and posted as a Private to 4th (Extra Reserve) Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment with the service number 30621, and later transferred again as a Private to the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) with the service number 45458. Very little information was found on his military service.


He died of Illness on 30th December 1919, his death was registered in St. Albans. The place of his burial was not found. He is not recorded on the CWGC Database.

Additional Information

His younger brother Private 24440 Claud Tilbury of the Middlesex Regiment was killed in action on 26th August 1916, during the Battle of the Somme, he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
