Pre War

Born in Deptford on 5 July 1884 to Alfred Albert Tindall and Sophia Tindall (nee Simson). Baptised at St John's, Deptford on 5 August 1884 when his father was described as a gentleman and their address as 6 Wickham Road.


His father was head of the publishing firm of Balliere, Tindall and Cox, having purchased the London business of Messrs Bailliere & Co. (of Paris) in 1870.


Howard was educated at Haileybury College near Hertford (1899–1903) and Pembroke College, Cambridge where he obtained an MA with honours and represented the University in cross country running.


He went into partnership with his father and was awarded the Freedom of the City of London on 24 Jul 1906 in the Company of Drapers, because his father had also been granted the same Freedom. On the 1911 Census, he was living with his family at Ashleigh Grange, Haywards Heath, Sussex and his occupation was given as assistant publisher.

Wartime Service

Enlisted in the Inns of Court O.T.C in Dec 1914 and was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant The Royal Berkshire Regiment in Mar 1915. Lieutenant in early 1916.

Entered France in early 1916 and fought at Messines Ridge. He was killed in action during an assault on Lens, while acting as Brigade Signalling Officer, and buried on the battlefield.

Additional Information

Miss K Tindall, Ashleigh Grange, Haywards Heath, Sussex, ordered his headstone inscription: "Sursum Corda" (Lift up your hearts). His link to Welwyn was through his elder brother Alfred Albert Tindall, a Medical Publisher, who lived with his wife Blanche and their family in Digswell. A war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £89 17s 10d was awarded to his estate. Probate was granted on 23 Mar 1918
