Pre War

Samuel William Eastwick was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, on 18th July 1880, son of Samuel Dennett Eastwick and Rachel Eastwick (nee Meager). Samuel Dennettt Eastwick married widow Rachel Smith (nee Meager) at All Saints Church, Mile End New Town, London, in February 1880.


Samuel Jr. was Baptised on 19th September 1880, in Cheshunt, Herts.


1881 Census records Samuel Jr. aged 8 months, living with his parents, two half-brothers and three half-sisters in, Windmill Street, Cheshunt, Herts.


Samuel Jr. attended St Mary’s Infants School, Cheshunt, from April 1885 until June 1888, when he transferred to Dewhurst Endowed Boys school, Cheshunt.


1891 Census records Samuel Jr. aged 10, at school, living with his parents, two half-brothers William (21) and John (13) Smith, half-sister Mary Smith (14), sister Rose Eastwick (9), brothers Charles Eastwick (7) and Albert Eastwick (3), still living in Windmill Street.


1901 Samuel Jr. (20) is working as a Nurseryman, living with his mother Rachel, brothers Charles (17) and Albert (13), still in Windmill Street. No 1901 Census record for his father Samuel Snr. was found.


1911 Samuel Jr. (30) brother Charles (26) and their parents are still living at, 26 Windmill Lane, (now recorded as Lane) Cheshunt, Herts.

Wartime Service

Samuel Jr. enlisted at Bedford, the date is not known, posted to the 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment with the service number 27525. Seeing service on the Western Front. 


He was Killed in Action on 19th April 1917, he is buried in the CWGC Loos British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

Additional Information

His father, Mr. Samuel D. Eastwick, 26, Windmill Lane, Cheshunt, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: "THE LORD GAVE AND THE LORD HATH TAKEN AWAY". His effects of £4-6s-7d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £3-10s-00d, went to his father Samuel Dannant Eastwick.
