Pre War

James Edward Eddon was born on 2nd July 1887 at Aldbury, Herts, the son of Robert and Mary Ann Eddon.  He was one of three children and was baptised at St Thomas's Westminster on 11th Dec 1887. Their address was Tring Station, Herts. 


On the 1891 Census the family were living at the Railway Station 285 Aldbury, where his father was the parcel porter. 


The 1911 census has James working as a railway clerk for the London and North Western Railway and living with his family at 6 Railway Cottages, Tring. Herts.


In June 1911, marriage banns were read for James and Minnie Eliza Collier and they were married in Aldbury on 1st July 1911. They had 2 sons: Geoffrey Arnold born 6th June 1912 and Arthur James born 21st July 1915.


His address on enlistment was 13 Shrublands Avenue, Berkhamsted.

Wartime Service

James enlisted in Watford on 3rd Nov 1915 and was put into the Army Reserve but not mobilised until 14th Nov 1916, joining K Coy, RASC and arriving in France on 13th Dec 1916.


He was appointed Lance Corporal on 13 January 1917.


He died of heart failure due to broncho-pneumonia on 16th Feb 1919 at No.5 Stationary Hospital, Dieppe, France and is buried at Janval Cemetery, Dieppe, France.

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £13 and pay owing of £16 18s 7d. She also received a pension of £1 5s 5d a week.
