Pre War

Frederick James Edwards was born in Tewin in 1883, the son of James and Mary Ann Edwards, and baptised there on 13 January 1884.


In 1891 the family were living at Nancy Bury, Tewin, (near Queen Hoo Hall), where his father was a Farm Labourer. By 1901 he had enlisted into the Bedfordshire Regiment and was residing at the 16th Brigade Depot at Kempston, Beds. On the 1911 Census he was a Private in the army with the 1st Bedfordshire Regiment Infantry at Maida Barracks, Aldershot, Surrey. His family were living at Stapleford, Herts.

Wartime Service

Frederick had been a serving soldier and was probably recalled at the outbreak of war. He enlisted at Hertford and served with the 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment from 30 July 1915 as Lance Corporal.


He died of wounds at No. 5 General Hospital, France on 19 August 1916, aged 32. Earlier in the month the 6th Battalion had been in action near Bazentin-le-Petit and Becourt Wood (Battle of Pozieres).


He is buried at St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £9 and pay owing of £6 11s 3d.

Brother to Herbert James Edwards who served with the 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment and died on 30 July 1916. He has no known grave and is named on the Thiepval Memorial.

Pension record cards exist in relation to Frederick and his brother brother Herbert but give no indication of the amount of pension received.
