Robert Tindall Stephen was born in Kincardine, Scotland in 1884, the son of Alexander and Mary Stephen. On the 1891 Census the family were living at 9 Wellington Street, Aberdeen, Scotland where his father was working as a railway porter.
He married Ethel Lydia Green in the Watford registration area (includes Bushey) in 1913. They had two children, Doris born 1914 and Robert born 1916. Robert was said to be resident in Bushey when he enlisted.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Watford and initially joined the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 29784, Bedfordshire Regiment, later being transferred to the Essex Regiment, 9th Battalion.
Robert was presumed dead on 10 August 1918, aged 34. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France.
Additional Information
His widow, Ethel, received a war gratuity of £12 10s and pay owing of £23 8s 10d. She later remarried to Archibald Bright in 1920 and lived at 68 Glencoe Road, Bushey, Herts and 6 Park Place, Wembley, Middx. Pension cards exist but give no indication of the amount of pension paid, only the change of address from Bushey to Wembley.
