Pre War

Ernest William was born in Derby on 6 Sep 1898 to James Tipping, a letterpress printer, and Ellen (nee Stevens). They were living at 55 Stanhope Street, Derby. Ernest had an older brother James Henry (born 28 Mar 1895).


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Arboretum Square, Derby and James Tipping was a printer’s process block prover. On the 1911 Census the family were now living at 18 Dynevor Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.  His parents were living at 4A, Mount View, Bells Hill, Barnet, Herts. in 1915

Wartime Service

Ernest attested on 2 Sep 1916 and was put on Army Reserve until 26 Feb 1917 when he was mobilised being posted to 28 Training Reserve Battalion on 28 Feb 1917.


Completing training Ernest was posted to 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) on 5 Nov 1917. The first Battle of Bapaume was fought on 24 -25 Mar 1918 during the German Spring Offensive. During this period of fighting and retreats by the British Army Ernest was posted as missed and presumed Killed in Action on 24 Mar 1918.


His remains were not recovered and he is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £5 10s and arrears of £10 12s 0d was paid to his father. Brother James Henry served in Royal Field Artillery from Mar 1915 as Corporal 95227 with postings in France and survived the war.
