Pre War

Born in Welwyn on 10 August 1886 to Sarah (nee Balls) and Francis Adams Titmus and baptised in Welwyn on 3 October 1886. They were a well-known Welwyn family, having 20 children, 5 of whom died in infancy.


Francis rose to prominence in the village, carrying out various businesses such as fishmonger, greengrocer, second hand furniture dealer and haulage contractor. They lived in Mill Lane. William George worked as a journeyman butcher and on the 1911 Census was boarding in Reigate, Surrey.

Wartime Service

He enlisted at Hitchin, initially into the Hertfordshire Regiment (formerly 9077), but was later transferred to the Lincolnshire Regiment, 8th Battalion. He died of wounds on 21st August 1917

Additional Information

A war gratuity of £3 10s was awarded to his father Francis, as well as pay owing of £4 9s 8d. His younger Brother was enlisted in 3rd Beds Regiment but was discharged as medically unfit in 1916.
