In 1901 The family were living in High Street, Arlesey, where his father was a tailor. On the 1911 Census he was living with his family at Rose Cottage, Pleasant Road, Bishop's Stortford and working as an apprentice Grocer.
Wartime Service
Charles initially served with the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry under Reg. No. 3839. He died during the Battle of Passchendaele at Mon du Hibou during an early morning attack on German machine gun concrete shelters. Most of the twelve company officers (and presumably many of the soldiers) became casualties in attempts to go forward. Two tanks were meant to support in the attack but previous rain had made the ground too wet for them. His body was not recovered for burial.
