Harold was born 2nd Nov 1896 at Bamber Bridge, Preston, Lancashire. He was the second son of John Henry & Isabel Toulmin.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in the Loyal (North Lancashire) Regiment and was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant 24 Nov 1914,


Lieutenant 11 Aug 1915, He went to Gallipoli in Aug 1915 and following the withdrawal from the Peninsula was in action in Mesopotamia. He was awarded the Military Cross in King’s Birthday Honours list on 3rd Jun 1916 and Mentioned in Dispatches 13th Jun 1916. During this service he suffered a wound to his left ankle which resulted in amputation and spells in Hospital in India and UK (London).


He was promoted to Captain, transferred to Royal Air Force and volunteered for service in France. He was posted to 46 Squadron and while flying a Sopwith Camel serial F2130 he went missing on 17th Sep 1918 and was presumed dead on 30 Sep 1918.
