George Arthur Ellis was born in Welwyn, Herts on 3 June 1888, the son of George and Lucy Ellis, and baptised there on 5 August 1888.


The family were living in Mill Lane, Welwyn on both the 1891 and 1901 Censuses and his father was working as an agricultural labourer. By the 1911, his mother had died and he was living with his widowed father and family at Hobbs Hill, Welwyn, Herts and working as a Carman for a Coal Merchant.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in St Albans and initially served with the Bedfordshire Regiment, later transferring to the Essex Regiment. 


He was killed in action in Palestine during the Battle of Gaza. His death was presumed and his body was not recovered for burial. His name is commemorated on the Jerusalem memorial, Israel.

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £3 10s. His sister Lucy Mary Walker of Ayot St Peter, nr, Welwyn, Herts is listed as his next of kin on some records. Brother to John Ellis also named on the Ayot St Peter memorial.
