Pre War

Arthur William English was born in 1882 in Holwell, Dorset, the son of Henry and Jane English.  On the 1891 Census the family were living at Barnes Cross, Holwell, Dorset where his father was working as a shoemaker. 


By the 1901 Census he was living as a Lodger at St James's Gardens, West Malvern, Worcestershire and working as a Gardener Domestic. He had moved to Broom Hall Gardens, Holmwood, Surrey by the 1911 Census and was a Foreman Gardener, Domestic, living with 3 other single young men who were all working as Gardeners Domestic. 


On 22 November 1913 he married Minnie Hing at St Peter and St Paul's Church, Little Gaddesden and they lived at 1 Kingshall, Berkhamsted. 


His parents remained living in Holwell, Dorset but his mother died in 1914 and his father in 1922.


His widow later returned to Little Gaddesden and married Herbert (Bert) Andrews in 1919 at Little Gaddesden church. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted at Dorking, Surrey and initially served with the Royal West Surrey Regiment (Reg. No. 13862), later transferring to the 2nd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. 


He died on 12 December 1917, whilst a prisoner of war,  from wounds received in action and is buried at Le Cateau Military Cemetery, France. 

Additional Information

His widow, Mrs M Andrews, 50 Little Gaddesden, Nr Berkhamsted, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: “THY WILL BE DONE”.

His widow received a war gratuity of £6 10s and pay owing of £6 7s 11d. She also received a pension of 13 s 9d a week.
