Pre War

Harry Tullett was born in Henfield/Rudgwick/ Steyning, Sussex, (depending on the document) in the early part of 1894, son of Edward Tullett, a Gardener, Nursery Manager and Sarah Ann/Annie Tullett (nee Grey). The seventh of eight children.


His father was a Gardener and Nursery Manager born in Worth (Crawley), Sussex, Abt. 1858, the family were constantly on the move due to his father’s occupation, working at the Victoria Nursery, Arundene Lane, Rudgwick 1897-1900, Woodbridge Nursery, Guilford, Surrey, and Sumner Road, West Croydon, Surrey, and others.


Harry was Baptised aged 3, with his sister Florence Rose (B 1897) on 16 May 1897, in the Parish of Rudgwick, Sussex. He attended Rudgwick Primary School, Rudgwick.


His mother Sarah died in January 1900, aged 42, she was buried in Rudgwick, Sussex on 20 January 1900.


1901 Census records Harry aged 7, living with his widower father and four siblings, (Near Woodbridge Nursery), Joseph Road, Stoke, Nr. Guildford, Surrey.


His father Edward married his second wife, widow Harriot Ricketts (nee Pannell) on 15 January 1905, in West Croydon, Surrey.


1911 Census records Harry aged 17, working as a Gardener, living with his father and stepmother Harriot at, 13 Murel Terrace, Summer Road, West Croydon.


It is not known when Harry moved to Hertfordshire, he was living in Waltham Cross, at the time he enlisted.

Wartime Service

Harry enlisted at Bedford, posted to the 17th (1st Football) Battalion, Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridges Own) with the service number initially 5996, then G/43677. On completion of his training Harry served on the Western Front.


He was killed in Action during the Attack on Redan Ridge on Sunday 13 November 1916, (Part of the Battle of the Somme 1 July -18 November 1916). He has no known grave and is commemorated on the CWGC Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, to the missing.


The 17th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment was part of the 6th Brigade, 2nd Division.


When the Battalion was first formed at Fulham Town Hall, in December 1914, it was like a Pal’s Battalion, initially made up of professional footballers, hence the (1st Football) there was two football Battalions 1st & 2nd. During Their training the professional footballers were allowed to return home at the weekend to play for their respective clubs.

His effects of £4-2s-2d, Pay Owing and £3, War gratuity went to his father Edward.


His elder brother Lance Corporal 95349 William James Tullett of the London Regiment, Royal Fusiliers, was Killed in Action on 10 September 1918. He also has no known grave, he is commemorated on the CWGC Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France, to the missing.
