Edward Percy Turner was born at St George's Hanover Square, London, on 7 July 1890, the son of George and Isabel Turner, and baptised at St Mark's Chapel, North Audley Street, London. On the 1891 Census, the family were living at  49 Green Street, St George's Hanover Square, where his father was a surgeon. Although still in St George's Hanover Square, they had moved to Half Moon Street by the 1901 Census. 


On the 1911 Census, he was a visitor at the house of Robert Henry Clarke, who was a retired surgeon, in Godstone Road, Whyteleafe, Surrey and was working as a Clerk to Australian merchants. His parents and sisters were then living at 'Newlands', Radlett, Herts, where his father was a Consulting Surgeon. 


He married Enriqueta Bockenham Brooking (who was born in Peru) on 17 December 1912 at St George's , Hanover Square and their daughter Lilian Diana was born on 14 October 1913 in Kobe, Japan, where he was employed as a Merchant's Assistant. She was baptised there on 14 February 1914.  The family returned to London on the Yasaka Maru on 3 January 1915 from Yokohama. Edward is listed as a Volunteer. 


(N.B. the ship Yasaka Maru was sunk hit by a torpedo from a U Boat in the Mediterranean off Port Said on 21 December 1915).

Wartime Service

He came back from Japan in January 1915 to join the Royal Field Artillery and served with the 24th Battalion, 38th Brigade in France from 27 May 1915.


He was killed in action on 19 March 1917 by which time he had been promoted to Acting Captain. He is buried at Philosphe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France.

Additional Information

Probate was granted to Enriquetta Bokenham Turner, widow, with effects of £1450 11s 1d. She received his pay owing of £158 10s 4d.


N.B. his medals were applied for by H T Thomas on 15 December 1919.


His widow remarried to Henry Thomas in 1918 in Somerset.
