Pre War

Henry Charles Turner was born in 1895 in Henham, Essex (Bishops' Stortford registration district) to Frederick and Eliza Turner. On the 1901 Census the family were living at 5 Dowsett Road, Leyton and his father was a platelayer on the railway. By the 1911 Census his mother had died and he was living with his widowed father and siblings at 116 Dunedin Road, Leyton, Essex and working as an engine cleaner on the Great Eastern Railway. He married Mabel Mills on 18 October 1916 at the Parish Church, Leyton and they lived at 71 Church Road, Leyton. His widow later remarried to John Warren in late 1919 and moved to Colchester.

Wartime Service

When he enlisted on 29 November 1916 his occupation was given as locomotive fireman. On 19 December 1917 he was posted to No.3 Reserve Brigade Siege Artillery. He later transferred to the Essex and Suffolk Royal Garrison Artillery. He was killed in action.

Additional Information

His widow Mabel received a war gratuity of £8 and pay owing of £5 2s 1d. She also received a pension of 13s 9d a week. She also received a pension of 13 shillings 9d a week from 31 March 1919.
