Biography

Henry Fisher was born on 28th May 1883 at Dover, one of three children born to Henry (senior) and Maria Fisher of 41 Clarendon Street, Hougham, Dover. The couple had two sons and a daughter and Henry (senior) worked as a Tailor’s Cutter. Henry continued to live at Clarendon Street until the 1911 Census, and worked as an Assistant Butterman and subsequently as a Wholesale Grocer’s Assistant.

In the 17th October 1914 edition of the The Hertfordshire Advertiser Henry was included in a Roll of Honour of men from the Leavesden Asylum who were serving. So at some point between 1911 and 1914 Henry had moved from Dover to work at the Asylum. His brother Vallance had gained employment at the Asylum as a Boot and Shoe Maker in 1911, and it is not certain which brother came to Abbots Langley first, or whether they arrived together.

In October 1914 the Abbots Langley Parish Magazine Roll of Honour listed Henry serving with Kitchener’s Army. In July 1915 he was recorded serving with the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). Many men with a nursing background from the Asylum served with the RAMC. Henry was recorded serving with the RAMC throughout the War.

Henry Fisher survived the War, as did his brother Vallance who was Discharged as Unfit for War Service in March 1918.
