Edward Charles Turney was born in Aldbury on 13 May 1891 (baptised 41 Jun 1891, St John, Aldbury) to Thomas Turney, a carter) and Susan (nee Burch, a straw plaiter).
On the 1891 Census the family of parents, William (born 1884), Albert (born 1886), Frederick (born & died 1888) and Kate (born 1870, a straw plaiter) were living at Aldbury, Herts.
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, William, Edward and Thomas (born 1894) were living at back, Maunders Crescent, Aldbury.
On the 1911 Census Edward was working as a horseman on a farm and was living with his parents, William, and Thomas (born 1894) at 11, Yew Row, Aldbury.
Wartime Service
Edward enlisted in the Hertfordshire Regiment as Private 6012, probably about early 1916 in Hertford. No Service Record was found for him.
He was transferred to Princess Charlotte of Wales’s (Royal Berkshire Regiment) in 6th(Service) Battalion which as part of 53 Brigade, 18th (Eastern) Division. In 1916 the division took part in the Battles of the Somme at Albert (1-13 Jul), Bazentin Ridge (14-17 Ju), Delville Wood (15 Jul-3 Sep), Thiepval (26-28 Sep) and Ancre Heights (1 Oct-11 Nov). It was this last action that Edward was killed on 1 Oct 1916, his remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £3 13s 3d was paid to his father. His brother Thomas served as Private 14549 1/1 Hertfordshire Regiment and was killed in action on 23 Aug 1918.
