Pre War

Thomas Turney was born on 1st October 1893, in Aldbury, Hertfordshire, son of Thomas Turney, a Carter  and Sarah Turney (nee Burch, a straw Plaiter). One of their seven children although 4 died in infancy. His parents were married on 25th September 1880, in Aldbury, Herts.


Thomas Jr. was Baptised on 30th November 1893 in the Parish of Aldbury, Herts.


1901 Census records Thomas Jr. aged 7, living with his parents, brothers William (17) and Edward (9), at the Back, Aldbury, Herts.


1911 Census Thomas Jr. (17), is working as a General Labourer, living with his parents, brothers William (27) and Edward (19), at 11 Yew Row, Aldbury, Herts.


The family later moved to 5 Rectory Cottages, Aldbury, Herts.

Wartime Service

Thomas Jr. travelled to the County Town of Hertford to enlist, posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment and issued with the service No. 14549. On completion of his training, he was sent to France arriving on 26th July 1915, with the 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. He was later posted to the Hertfordshire Regiment. He was Killed in Action on 23rd August 1918, he has no known Grave, he is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial in France to the missing. Panel 4 & 5.

Additional Information

His effects of £11-03s-05d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £19, went to his father Thomas Turney.


Brother Private 36482 Edward Charles Turney, served with the 6th Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment, he was Killed in Action on 1st October 1916.


Brother William George Turney served in WW 1 and survived.


George Willmore MM. who is on the Aldbury Memorials, died on the same day as Thomas Jr., same place, served in the same Regiment and is commemorated on the same Memorial in France. (Vis-En-Artois Memorial, pas de Calais, France. Panel 4 & 5).
