Pre War

Herbert Tyler was born in Tewin in 1883, the son of William and Hannah Tyler, and baptised there on 14 January 1883. He was one of eleven children, but two had died by 1911.


On the 1891 Census the family were living at Upper Green, Tewin where his father was working as a Gardener/Domestic Servant. By 1901 they had moved to Lower Green, Tewin with his father working as a Garden Labourer and Herbert working as a gardener.


In 1911 he was listed as boarding at 28 Bernard Road, Wallington, Surrey and was working as a Jobbing Gardener. 


He married Annie Hill on 9 August 1914 at Holy Trinity Church, Wallington, and gave his address as 4 Baledon Road, Carshalton, Surrey. They had a son Herbert Richard born on 4 May 1918 and were living at 137, Stanley Rd., Carshalton-on-the-Hill, Wallington, Surrey.

Wartime Service

Herbert enlisted at Kingston, Surrey in October 1916 and initially served with the Huntingdonshire Cyclists Battalion under reg. no. 2448, later transferring to the West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own).


He died of wounds on 17 October 1917, aged 34, which he received during the Battle of Ypres and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. 

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £3 10s and pay owing of £4 6s 5d. She also received a pension of £1 0s 5d a week for herself and her son. She remarried to Sidney Thomas in 1920 and lived at 40 Bute Road, Wallington, Surrey.


She requested the headstone inscription: "YET AGAIN WE HOPE TO MEET THEE WHEN THE DAY OF LIFE HAS FLED" 


Brother to Ernest Joseph Tyler also listed on the Tewin memorial. Herbert and his brother Ernest are also commemorated on the grave of their sister Emily in Tewin (St. Peter) Churchyard. Their inscription reads:

ERNEST JOSEPH TYLER. PTA. 6TH BEDS REGT. KILLED IN ACTION [FRANCE] JULY 15TH 1916 AGED 21.
“GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN.”

HERBERT TYLER, PTA. 11TH YORKS REGT. DIED OF WOUNDS IN FRANCE OCT. 17TH 1917 AGED 35.
“IN THE MIDST OF LIFE WE ARE IN DEATH.”
