Frederick Thomas Underwood was born in Ickleford, Herts on 14 April 1892, the son of Alfred and Alice Underwood and baptised on 6 November 1892 at St Katherine's Ickleford. He was one of eleven children, although four had died by 1911.


On the 1901 Census the family were living in the Village Street, Ickleford where his father was working as a Railway Labourer. They remained in Ickleford in 1911 but had moved to Bygraves Yard, Village Street, Ickleford, at which time, Frederick was working as a Tanner and his father was a Platelayer on the railway.

Wartime Service

Frederick enlisted in Hitchin in August 1914 and served with the 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. They arrived in France on 30 August 1915 and were soon in action at the Battle of Loos in September.


He was killed in action on 16 March 1916 when the Battalion were in trenches near Poperinge, Belgium.


He is buried at Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Belgium. 

Additional Information

His sister Bertha Titmus received a war gratuity of £3 10s and pay owing of £7 3s 1d.


Pension cards exist but no information on amount of pension, if paid.
