Pre War

Alec Undrill was born on 15 February 1885 in Bishop's Stortford to Alfred and Emma (Emily) Undrill and baptised at Hockerill on 26 August 1885. On the 1891 Census he was living with his family at 133 Westdown Road, Leyton. The family remained at the same address on the 1901 Census, although his father was not listed, and Alec was working as a printer’s labourer.  By 1911 he was already a soldier serving in India, a Private in the Essex Regiment.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Ilford, Essex into the Essex Regiment. He served in the Balkans from 25 April 1915 and was killed in action in Gallipoli. According to family sources, he was hit by a grenade whilst shielding his best friend, thus saving his life.

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £6 and his pay owing was divided between his father and his aunt, Mrs Emily Fuller. It was his aunt who applied for his medals.
