Pre War

James Field was born in 1884 in Baldock, Herts, the son of James and Mary Field and was baptised on 10 February 1888 in Baldock. His father died in 1887, aged 60, and was buried on 19 May 1887 in Baldock.


On the 1891 Census he was living with his widowed mother and siblings Henry, Joseph, Martha, Louisa, Charlie, and Mary at Norton End, Baldock. He remained living with his mother at Norton End in 1901 and was then working as a farm labourer. 


He married May M West in 1912 and they had three children, Marjory (1912), Annie (1914) and Marguerita (1917).

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bedford and served with the 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. 


He died of wounds received in action in Belgium on 10 June 1917 and is buried at Lijessenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. 

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £11 and pay owing of £5 4s 7d, She also received a pension of £1 6s 3s a week for herself and her three children. She gave her address on pension records as 6 California, Baldock, Herts.
