Gordon Cunliffe was born on 15 August 1892 at Hildenborough, Tonbridge Kent, the son of Roger and Evelyn Cunliffe


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Ayot House, Ayot St  Lawrence, Herts. His father's occupation was given as banker and Gordon was one of three children then living at home. Also listed with them were ten servants and a governess.  

Wartime Service

He served as 2nd Lieutenant with the Hertfordshire Yeomanry in the Egyptian and Balkan theatre from 25 September 1914. He was admitted to the Hospital Ship Assaye, on 20 April 1915 as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. At some point he was promoted to Captain in the 21st Corps, Cavalry Regiment.


Gordon died on 23 February 1920, aged 27, at Hotel Hermitage in Monte Carlo, Monaco. His body was returned to England and buried in St John the Evangelist Churchyard, Hildenborough, Tonbridge, Kent with his brother Roger.

[N.B. his home address was recorded for probate as Ayot House, Welwyn. 


A commemorative plaque was placed in Ayot St Lawrence (Palladian Church), Hertfordshire which reads "GOD BLESS THEE WHERESOEVER IN GOD'S WIDE UNIVERSE THOU ART TODAY".
