Pre War

Herbert George Vincent was born in 1895 in Takeley, Essex, to John and Elizabeth Vincent. On the 1901 Census the family were living at The Street, Takeley where his father was a bricklayer’s labourer. The family were still living in The Street on the 1911 Census (although his father is not listed) and Herbert was working as a Jobbing Gardener. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Chelmsford, Essex and served with the Royal Engineers in France from 24 July 1915. He was probably killed during the Battle of Guillemont (part of the Battle of the Somme. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £9 and pay owing of £15 14s 1d. She also received a pension of 5 shillings a week from 6 November 1918. Brother to John William Vincent who served in the Royal Navy and died on HMS Defence on 31 May 1916 and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.
