William Wilks Fitzgerald was born about 1895 in Belfast and was the son Maurice F. and Anna M. Fitzgerald.

Wartime Service

He joined Royal Flying Corps as Air Mechanic 2 and went to France 2 may 1915 gaining a commission as 2nd Lieutenant Commission 18 Sep 15 and was with 25 Squadron RFC .


He was Observer in the aircraft (De Havilland  DH4 serial A7479) piloted by 2nd Lieutenant W L Lovell when the aircraft was shot down on 27 Jul 1917. They are buried alongside each other.

His father, Mr M F Fitzgerald, Fairholme of Kill-O'-the-Grange, Blackrock, Co. Dublin, ordered his headstone inscription: “AN ONLY CHILD BY SUCH SACRIFICES WAS PEACE MADE POSSIBLE"
